Moorhead Man Faces 2 Felony Arson Charges

MOORHEAD (trfnews.i234.me) — A Moorhead man faces felony charges after an apartment fire during an argument.

Alexey Donald Schreiner, 34, is charged with two counts of first-degree arson of a dwelling.

Each charge carries a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The charges were filed in Clay County, according to a criminal complaint.

The case has also been designated as a domestic violence court case.

Police Called To Apartment Fire

Officers were sent to the apartment at about 6:57 a.m. Friday.

A woman living there told police an argument had started earlier that morning.

She said Schreiner accused her of hiding another man inside the apartment.

He also accused her of cheating on him, according to the complaint.

The woman denied both accusations.

The complaint says Schreiner then began packing his belongings and smashed an ashtray.

He allegedly grabbed the woman’s torch lighter and set a box of clothing on fire.

The box was located in the apartment’s dining room.

The woman tried to put out the flames using water.

She then noticed the living room couch was also burning, according to the complaint.

Woman Extinguished Both Fires

The woman was able to extinguish both fires before calling 911.

Schreiner had left the apartment before officers arrived, according to the complaint.

The woman also reported another fire inside the apartment about one week earlier.

She told investigators Schreiner claimed that earlier fire was an accident.

He allegedly said he dropped a cigarette inside a closet.

Police later located Schreiner and detained him.

The complaint says Schreiner admitted during questioning that he started the apartment fire.

First-Degree Arson Charges
