Mayville State QB Shows Signs of Progress in Fargo

Mayville (trfnews.i234.me) — Mayville State quarterback Matt Donovan showed additional signs of progress Saturday while recovering from a serious head injury.

His father, Terry Donovan, shared the latest update in a Facebook post on October 3.

The family said Matt completed two breathing trials during the day.

He also responded to commands by squeezing his sister Ashley’s hand and giving a thumbs-up.

Injured During September Football Game

Donovan suffered a head injury during Mayville State’s September 19 football game against Simpson University.

The injury happened following a collision during the third quarter.

He was airlifted to Fargo for emergency medical treatment.

According to the school, Donovan underwent brain surgery.

He was later placed in a medically induced coma as part of his treatment.

Breathing Trials Show Continued Progress

Terry Donovan said Matt completed two breathing trials Saturday.

The first lasted approximately 90 minutes.

A second trial lasted around 30 minutes.

Matt was then returned to full respiratory support.

His father stressed that this did not mean anything had gone wrong.

The trials help medical teams determine how much breathing support Matt currently needs.

Responding To Family Members

Terry Donovan said Matt was sleepy and quiet during much of Saturday.

The neuro care team believes he may have his days and nights mixed up.

He became more active later in the evening.

Matt reportedly squeezed Ashley’s hand and gave a thumbs-up when asked.

His father also described sitting beside Matt and holding his hand.

Terry said Matt squeezed his hand while they talked.

When asked if he wanted his father to stay, Matt reportedly squeezed again with more force.

Terry remained at his bedside for another hour.

Possible Move To Another Care Unit

The family said there is a good chance Matt could leave his current care unit soon.

However, the next stage of treatment has not been determined.

That decision will depend on his wakefulness and the level of medical care he requires.

The family continues asking supporters for prayers focused on Matt’s wakefulness, courage, and recovery.
