Grand Forks Man Accused of Beating Neighbor Unconscious
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (northwestmnnow.com) — A Grand Forks man faces multiple criminal charges after an alleged violent attack inside a neighbor’s home.
Joseph Alfred Lavallie, 52, is accused of entering the residence without permission and repeatedly beating the homeowner.
According to court documents, the incident happened on the night of October 5, 2026.
The victim told investigators he feared for his life during the attack and eventually lost consciousness.
Neighbor Describes Violent Attack Inside Home
According to a police affidavit, Lavallie initially went to the residence looking for his girlfriend.
The victim reported being in his kitchen when Lavallie returned to the home without permission.
Investigators say Lavallie allegedly told the homeowner he “owned” him before punching him several times in the face.
The victim said Lavallie then struck him in the back of the head with an unidentified object.
The blow knocked him to the floor, according to the affidavit.
He attempted to escape by crawling beneath a table and moving toward the front door.
However, the victim told police the assault continued as he tried to get away.
Victim Says He Lost Consciousness During Assault
Court documents describe another disturbing part of the alleged attack.
The victim reported that Lavallie placed his foot on the back of his neck, making breathing difficult.
He told investigators the pressure caused him to lose consciousness.
The victim also reported being struck hard enough that his dentures flew from his mouth near the front door.
According to the affidavit, the man said he was “in fear for his life” during the incident.
Witness Finds Victim Injured
Investigators also spoke with a witness who described leaving the residence for approximately five minutes.
When she returned, the witness reported finding the homeowner badly beaten.
Her account was included in the affidavit supporting the criminal charges.
Lavallie denied being at the residence or assaulting the victim when questioned by investigators, according to court documents.
Three Criminal Charges Filed
Prosecutors filed three charges against Lavallie following the investigation.
- Felony burglary: Burglary at night with a weapon.
- Felony terrorizing: Allegedly placing an adult victim in fear during the incident.
- Hindering law enforcement: Allegedly providing false information to investigators.
The charges stem from the events described in the police affidavit.
The accusations have not been proven in court. Lavallie is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
