What Is Anhydrous Ammonia?
Anhydrous ammonia is widely used as an agricultural fertilizer across North Dakota.
Farmers use the chemical to add nitrogen to soil and improve crop production.
The product is usually stored and transported inside pressurized tanks.
Anhydrous ammonia is classified as a hazardous material during transportation.
The chemical can be dangerous if it escapes from a damaged tank.
Exposure can harm the eyes, skin and respiratory system.
The chemical can also cause serious burns when people come into direct contact with it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides safety information about ammonia exposure.
Officials said no leak had been detected following Monday’s rollover.
The traffic diversion is being used as a safety precaution while crews complete the transfer.
Drivers Asked To Avoid Area
Authorities are asking drivers to stay away from the Highway 2 and Highway 20 intersection.
The restriction is expected to remain until crews safely clear the crash scene.
Drivers should watch for emergency vehicles and temporary traffic controls in the area.
Anyone approaching the scene should follow all instructions from emergency workers.
